AP business writer Kelvin Chan came up with the idea for a consumer-friendly feature that explains to everyday people how to use technology and would be shareable and clickable online. After discussing it as a goal for 2024, the opportunity arose with the new iPhone software update, which brought a key new feature — Stolen Device Protection.

Chan quickly came up with a format for the new tech feature, called “How To Tech,” and worked with text editors, video leaders, the social video team and others on the digital side to get the text story done, shoot the social video, provide it to Horizons for broadcast customers, stack the story with how-to screenshots and a Hearken question soliciting future ideas, and promote the story on APNews and social platforms.
